Love You to Death: The Paper Mill Murders - A Suspense Thriller Wrapped in Secrets, Fear and Unexpected Love

Some time ago, I had the opportunity to edit Love You to Death: The Paper Mill Murders, a suspense thriller by Snigdha B. Khatawkar, published by FlyDreams.

Set in the Navinpur Paper Mills Colony, the novel takes us into a tightly knit community where generations of employees and their families have grown up together. The Colony is almost a world of its own, with its school, clubs, parks, swimming pool and everyday life contained within its boundaries. For the youngsters who have grown up there, it is home, and Shefali’s wedding is supposed to be a celebration shared by the entire community.

But on the night of the Colony’s first wedding, everything changes.

Shefali disappears just before the wedding rituals are about to begin. What initially seems like a possible elopement quickly turns into something far more disturbing when Jash discovers Shefali’s body hidden behind the Club House. The discovery turns the celebratory wedding venue into a crime scene and brings the police into a community where almost everyone knows everyone else.

At the centre of the story is Jash, a nineteen-year-old Colony girl who finds herself drawn into the mystery while also dealing with her own complicated emotions, friendships and attractions. Her childhood crush on Abhishek exists alongside her growing fascination with the investigating inspector, adding an unexpectedly personal dimension to the unfolding mystery.

As the investigation progresses, the apparently familiar and safe Colony begins to reveal a much darker side. Alibis are questioned, old incidents acquire new significance, and the possibility that the killer may be someone from within this closely connected community makes the mystery even more unsettling. The investigation ultimately expands beyond Shefali’s murder as more deaths and hidden connections come to light.

What I particularly enjoyed about working on the novel was the way it combines a classic murder mystery with the dynamics of a small, insular community. The story is not simply about finding a killer. It is also about how a shocking crime changes relationships, disrupts a familiar way of life and forces people to look differently at those they thought they knew.

Love You to Death: The Paper Mill Murders is a story of murder, investigation, secrets, relationships and changing loyalties, set against a community where the biggest mystery may be how well its people really know one another.

Looking Beyond Behaviour

I recently had the opportunity to edit Lead the Room, Keep the Child by author Mr. Ujjwal Mukherjee, published by FlyDreams Publications. The book explores a deceptively simple question: When a child’s behaviour changes, are we listening to what it is trying to communicate?

The book challenges the conventional approach to discipline. Instead of stopping at “What did the child do?”, it encourages teachers and parents to ask “Why?” Its central idea is that behaviour is often communication, and understanding the need beneath it can lead to more meaningful discipline and stronger adult-child relationships. 

A meaningful project to be part of, and one that left me with a thought worth carrying beyond the pages: Before we correct a child’s behaviour, perhaps we should first ask what the behaviour is trying to tell us.

किताबों के बीच, इंसानों की कहानियाँ...

कुछ दिन पहले फ्लाईड्रीम पब्लिकेशंस के बेहतरीन इवेंट “किताबें ज़रा हटके उत्सव” का हिस्सा बनने का अवसर मिला। सत्यवती कॉलेज, दिल्ली के शांत-सुंदर प्रांगण में कदम रखते ही जैसे एक कल्पनाओं का अलग ही संसार इंतज़ार में था। 

इस बार अंतर बस इतना था कि किताबी कल्पनाओं की जगह कल्पनाओं को रचने वाले महान लेखक, कवि, प्रकाशक और कलाकार सामने थे - श्री परशुराम शर्मा, श्री समीर गांगुली, श्री योगेश मित्तल, श्री रूपेश कुमार, श्रीमती सुमन वाजपेयी, श्री राम पुजारी, श्री अभिलाष दत्ता, श्री देव प्रसाद, श्री नृपेंद्र कुमार शर्मा, श्री मनमोहन भाटिया, श्री विकास नैनवाल, श्रीमती नेहा अरोरा, श्रीमती नम्रता सिंह, श्री समीर घोषाल, श्री मेषू कांबोज, श्री अनमोल दुबे, श्री सौम्य मोहन शर्मा, श्री सर्वेश कुमार, श्री प्रांजल सक्सेना, श्रीमती शोभा शर्मा। 

सभी सत्र एक से बढ़कर एक थे। ऐसा लग रहा था साहित्य के हर पहलु को छूने की कोशिश की गई हो। नेहा अरोरा जी ने बेहतरीन ढंग से कहानी सुनाकर समां बाँध दिया। 

एक सत्र में मुझे भी संदीप मुरारका जी और साकेत कुमार जी के साथ बनाई अपनी कॉमिक सीरीज पर अनमोल दुबे के साथ मंच पर बात करने का मौका मिला। ये कॉमिक्स भारतीय आदिवासी समाज से निकली महान हस्तियों के संघर्ष की कहानी बताती हैं। इनमें से भज्जू श्याम जी और गुलाबो सपेरा पर आधारित कॉमिक्स प्रकाशन के लिए तैयार हैं।

इवेंट के दौरान नितीश झा, अमिताभ मिश्रा, प्रिंस आयुष, मोहनीश कनौजिया, नावेद रोहिल्ला खान, व्योम, कंचन ठाकुर, आदित्य वत्स, राजू गोयल आदि साथियों से लंबी बातचीत हुई। टीम ‘सोल टॉक’ द्वारा काव्य समापन मनोरंजक रहा। फ्लाईड्रीम्स के स्टॉफ़ और वॉलंटियर टीम ने बहुत अच्छा काम किया।

अंत में फ्लाईड्रीम्स के दफ़्तर लौटकर भी बातों का सिलसिला जारी रहा। इस शानदार आयोजन को करने वाले मिथिलेश जी, जयंत जी और बाद में जाने वाले कुछ साथियों के साथ भोजन हुआ। फिर देव प्रसाद और अभिलाष दत्ता ने आम सी बातों से ऐसा हास्य का माहौल बनाया कि काफी समय बाद मैं हँस-हँस के पागल हो गया। ....और इस तरह किताबें ज़रा हटके उत्सव हमेशा के लिए एक यादगार इवेंट बन गया।

किताबें ज़रा हटके उत्सव: वे लोग जिन्होंने इसे मुमकिन बनाया

 

किसी आयोजन को सफल बनाने से भी पहले एक प्रयास होता है...कि कम से कम आयोजन तो हो जाए। दिमाग में आया विचार सही मूर्त रूप ले ले ऐसा तो लाखों में कुछ मामलों में हो पाता है। लेकिन एक आयोजन को सफल बनाने के पीछे कुछ ऐसे निस्वार्थ लोगों का योगदान होता है जो इस हद तक उसमें लग जाते हैं जैसे उनकी बहन की शादी हो! खैर, ऐसे ही लोग इस टॉक्सिक, दम घोंटू समाज के लिए ऑक्सीजन का काम करते हैं। 11 अक्टूबर, 2025 को सत्यवती कॉलेज, अशोक विहार, दिल्ली में हुए फ्लाईड्रीम्स पब्लिकेशंस के किताबें ज़रा हटके उत्सव में मुझे कुछ ऐसे ही लोगों से मिलने का सौभाग्य मिला।  

1. अनमोल दुबे: 

पूरा कार्यक्रम जिस तरह व्यवस्थित तरीके से चला, उसमें अनमोल का योगदान अहम रहा। ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे आयोजन की हर छोटी-बड़ी बारीकी उन्हें पहले से पता हो। वॉलंटियर्स की टीम, सत्रों की रूपरेखा, मंच और तकनीकी पक्ष - हर जगह उनकी नज़र थी। किसी भी समस्या के आने से पहले वे उसके समाधान के साथ तैयार दिखे। उनकी शांति और आत्मविश्वास ने पूरे माहौल को संयम और प्रोफेशनलिज़्म से भरा रखा। एक सत्र में लेखक की अनुपस्थिति को उन्होंने बड़े अच्छे ढंग से संभाला। 

2. सुनीता: 

गेट के बाहर से लेकर अंदर तक, हर मेहमान का स्वागत, उन्हें गाइड करना, बुक स्टॉल्स को संभालना और एक-एक व्यक्ति की ज़रूरत पर ध्यान देना - सुनीता और उनकी  वालंटियर   टीम ने हर काम में पूरा समर्पण दिखाया। वे लगातार सक्रिय रहीं, बिना थके, बिना शिकायत के। किसी पाठक को सही किताब तक पहुँचाना हो या किसी अतिथि की सुविधा का ध्यान रखना - हर जगह उनकी उपस्थिति भरोसे का अहसास दिला रही थी। टीम के अन्य सदस्य - स्मृति, तान्या, अभिजात्या, साक्षी, प्रियांशु, प्रजेश, आलोक और संजीव ने उनका भरपूर साथ दिया।

3. सौम्य मोहन शर्मा: 

इवेंट के पहले सत्र के होस्ट के रूप में सौम्य ने अपनी परिपक्वता और आत्मविश्वास से सबका ध्यान खींचा। उनकी टीम ने आयोजन के हर पहलू को बारीकी से कवर किया। लेखकों और कवियों के इंटरव्यू लिए, वीडियो बाइट्स रिकॉर्ड कीं और पूरे दिन एक पेशेवर लेकिन सौम्य रवैये से काम किया। उनका प्रयास इस आयोजन की डॉक्यूमेंटेशन को यादगार बना गया, और यह कहना गलत नहीं होगा कि उनकी टीम ने इस दिन कई घंटों तक लगातार काम करके इस इवेंट को कई दशकों तक याद रखने लायक बना दिया।

4. हीरालाल भारद्वाज: फ्लाईड्रीम्स पब्लिकेशंस के प्रमुख स्टाफ सदस्यों में से एक, हीरालाल जी हर उस जगह मौजूद थे जहां ज़रूरत थी। पर्दे के पीछे का काम हो या बाहर की व्यवस्था, उन्होंने हर जिम्मेदारी को बखूबी निभाया। दिनभर की भागदौड़ में शायद ही कोई ऐसा क्षण था जब वे किसी एक जगह कुछ समय से ज़्यादा दिखाई दिए हों। उनका समर्पण आयोजन की मज़बूत रीढ़ की तरह था।

इन सभी लोगों के साथ-साथ वालंटियर, स्टॉफ (जैसे - निशांत मौर्य, शहाब खान), कॉलेज के कई छात्रों ने अपने-अपने स्तर पर जो मेहनत की, उसने इस पूरे आयोजन को सिर्फ एक साहित्यिक उत्सव नहीं, बल्कि एक टीमवर्क की मिसाल बना दिया। “किताबें ज़रा हटके उत्सव”, उस दिन केवल लेखन और रचनात्मकता का जश्न नहीं था, बल्कि यह उन लोगों के जुनून और मेहनत की कहानी भी थी जो पर्दे के पीछे रहकर उसे संभव बनाते हैं।

World Book Fair 2023, New Delhi Day 1-2 Highlights

It was an absolute pleasure to have met so many of you at our H2, 234 stall during the book fair. As an author, connecting with both familiar faces and new readers is always a highlight for me, and this event was certainly no exception. I want to express my sincere gratitude to Shubhanand, Himanshu Mishra, Vishi Sinha, Jyoti Singh, Abhiraj, Mit Gupta, Vikas Nainwal, Anurag Yadav, Alok Kumar, Manmohan Bhatia, Sidharth Arora, Lalit, and Pawan for visiting my stall and engaging in such meaningful discussions with me.

Furthermore, I had an incredible time collaborating with my co-authors and launching eight anthologies at the "Flairs and Glairs Publication" stall located in Hall 5. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase our collective work and passion for literature to readers, and I am grateful for the experience.
